The first thing you need to do to get you started is download the latest versions of devkitARM and the libraries that come with it, provided by devkitPro. This is the core to all/most homebrew programs on the DS, as it provides the basic functions to access the various hardware functions of the DS. Luckily, the folks have supplied an easy-to-use program called devkitPro Updater, which allows you to install the whole package in just a few clicks.
Normally, the download URLs from sourceforge have the mirror selection and meta/js stuff. The URLs used here (and for a bunch of other packages) are the 'legacy' short ones, that should automatically use the first available/best mirror and just redirect to the file, sf.net has provided them for ages. Download devkitpro free shared files from DownloadJoy and other world's most popular shared hosts. Our filtering technology ensures that only latest devkitpro files are listed. Download the latest version of the graphical installer from github and run it, following the instructions as you go. An Internet connection is required. Ensure at least '3DS Development' is ticked - you can also leave the other options ticked if you wish. Feb 26, 2017 Just download the repository, and run 'make install' in the root of the libctru folder, then it should install to your DevkitPro installation. After that, try again. Astrr likes this. DevkitPro currently provide 3 toolchains, devkitARM, devkitPPC and devkitA64 along with a number of support libraries. All of them are managed via pacman. Please note: devkitPro is the organisation that provides the tools.
Upon downloading and opening, a basic setup dialogue should appear. There isn’t much you need to change here, though, if you want, you can choose to remove your downloaded files. Simply click through until you get to a screen looking like this:
PAlib itself only requires 8 of these components, but you can install all of them if you wish. The components that need to be installed are:

- libfat-nds
- dswifilib
- filesystem
It is also recommended that you also install ‘nds examples’ (examples for libnds) and ‘Programmer’s Notepad’ (a basic IDE), though they don’t necessarily affect the functionality of PAlib.
Once you have chosen your options, proceed to the next page, which will allow you to choose where you want to install the toolchain and the libraries - basically your place for DS development. Put it wherever you like – it doesn’t affect the compilation, as long as you don’t put it in a directory that contains spaces (eg, ‘C:/NintendoDS/devkitPro’ would be fine, but ‘C:/Nintendo DS/devkitPro’ will cause compilation problems).
The updater/installer will then start downloading and installing the required packages. A few dialogs may pop up, displaying ‘Extracting…’ with a status bar, but you don’t need to worry about them – the installation requires no further actions.

Please note: This is the installer provided by devkitPro which installs and updates the tools and libraries we provide and support. devkitPro is an organisation and has no versions. The version number here refers to the installer and has no relevance to any of the toolchains or other components we supply.
Please do not use this installer and then overwrite anything with downloads provided by 3rd parties. Downgrading individual components can and will cause problems with your installation.
If you require help updating old projects to work with updated tools and libraries then please ask. Please do not downgrade your tools or advise others to do so.

OSX & linux users can obtain pacman from https://github.com/devkitPro/pacman/releases/latest. You will still need to use the appropiate perl script to obtain the toolchains for now but we hope to provide pacman packages for those in the near future.
